Mexican Tin Retablo The Holy Family Flight to Egypt, Framed

Mexico

Late 19th century | Tin, Wood, Paint | Item 2621

This is an unusual Mexican tin painting that has been framed in wood. The painting depicts a traditional Mexican retablo on tin depicting the Holy Family during the “Rest on the Flight into Egypt”, likely from the later part of the 19th century. The scene painting is beautiful and tranquil. There is writing at the bottom that I have not yet been able to translate. There is a wood box in the back that does not hold anything. The box is well made and in very good condition.

These folk art paintings on tin were widely produced in Mexico form the 17th through the 19th centuries and placed in home alters to seek divine protection or give thanks for miracles.

Dimensions 17 1/2" by 13 1/2" and 3 1/4" deep (the box portion)
Condition Very good with little paint loss
