19th C. Conquistador Hide Helmet

Item #: 704
Origin: Spanish Colonial, likely South America possibly Bolivia
Date: 19th Century
Media: Hide
Dimensions: 11″ x 8.3 inches
Description: This helmet is hard like wood and light in weight.  The form is in excellent shape, showing the zig zag cutout to the top portion.  The fur on the hide is mostly present, but worn away in areas more exposed to surface rubbing.  This helmet is a powerful reminded of the early batter years of the Spanish Colonialists in the Americas and the sparsity of metal as a resource.  The construction of heavy hide used to sew together the parts is very similar to the makings of their hide shields.
