19th Century Spanish (?) Neoclassical Silver Bracelet

Unknown, Spanish or European, possibly American

Silver | Item 2164

The Navajo learned to make jewelry from the Spanish local to them. I have always wondered what the jewelry looked like that was being made by the Spanish in what is now New Mexico. This bracelet, appearing to have been hammered, possibly out of coin, seems a possible contender, but this is only conjecture. What I do see is a neoclassical motif done in repousse. The center has a putto, or cherub with wings. He has on both sides of him well figured angles. These angles, with all their accoutrements, bleed out toward the terminals in a highly effective way. This bracelet has wonderful wear to it and while I feel secure it is 19th century, I do wonder if it might be a good deal older, possibly early 19th or even 18th century.
