A Family of Teddy Weahkee Mudhead Figures

Likely by Teddy Weahkee, Zuni

First quarter, 20th century | Antler, Hide, Paint | Item 2431

How charming and sweet is this! Three, mudhead kachinas made from antler, then painted with a sepia color and dressed with hide. These are attributed to the Zuni carver Teddy Weahkee (1890 – 1965). Bumps taken from the antlers make up the facial features – eyes, mouth and ears. Fingers and toes are differentiated on the hands and feet. All these features have been more exposed to rubbing, so the effect is that they stand out being the natural antler color and not the color overpaint.
