A Very Fine Navajo Double Saddle Blanket

Navajo - likely Tees Nos Pos

Circa 1925 | Wool | Item 1925

This is as fine a Navajo double saddle blanket that I have ever seen. The warp count is 14 per inch, and the weft count 72 wefts per inch. This sort of fine weaving is characteristic of the earlier Tees Nos Pos weavings. We have here a complex border surrounding two empty fields. The upper field contains the writing “R.B.71211”. This could refer to a person’s initials followed by a birth date (July 12, 1911) or the number could be a Native persons government id number, such as a rations number. The heart motif found in the upper open field border is complimented with the heart shape coming out of the pink yarn corner tassels.

Dimensions 47" by 23"
Condition Excellent, with both sides equal in value and color.
Provenance Private collection in Denver, CO
