Acomita Water Jar, Early 19th Century

Acomita

1800 - 1825 | Item 2260

This is a classic example of the Acomita water jar. The bulbous shape that comes up into a tall neck is typical Acomtia. The deep, red underbody has an outward flare at the top the red where a single, thin line defines the two parts – bulbous upper body and flaring underbody. The very bottom is indented to fit on top of a head. The designs are classic Acomita. Capped feathers become part of a elliptical shape with various thickness to its line. It’s a bit like a spiral, but not quite, and it dives into the top, single framing line just below the neck.

The overall design is too complex to try and describe and this is part of the magic of this jar. The top of the shoulder is lined with filled in half circles, or scallops. Above these scalopes is a tall neck void of design. This lack of design in the neck is one of the dating factors according to Francis Harlow. The inside of of the neck is painted the same red as the base going down into the interior 2″. One side of the jar shows effects from the fire clouds. This is a permanent feature of this jar. A jar like this in mint condition with no restoration could cost north of $30,000. Here is a chance to own a rare and early jar that looks wonderful with the high grade restoration.
