An Early and Fine Navajo Double Saddle Blanket With Open Center
Item: 1374
Origin: Navajo
Date: Circa 1870
Media: Hand spun wool
Dimensions: 51.5″ by 27″
Description: This is such a beautiful and sublime Navajo double saddle blanket. The wool is churro and the weave is very fine. The handle and look is like a classic blanket. It’s the earliest saddle blanket I have found to date. The open center of variegated brown yarns is highly sophisticated with its subtle shifts in colorations, often set off by a lazy line. The meandering, zig-zag stepped border is much like the stepping in classic blankets used to create a diagonal line between colors. This whole internal open center with border is floating on the background of cream white. The final border around the cream white background is a highly variegated brown edge between 1.5″ – 2″ wide. It doesn’t get any better than this!
