An Early Navajo, Single, Dress Panel, ex Tyron Campbell Collection

Navajo

Wool | Item 2215

The reds in this dress panel are from raveled bayeta yarns, worsted and s-spun and are dyed with a mixture of 70% cochineal and 30% lac. The brown weft in the center is hand spun wool and shows beautiful variations (abrash) within its boundaries. The simple undulation of linked diamonds in indigo blue make up the main design. This sort of design is from the classic period of Navajo weaving. This dress panel could date from 1840 to 1860. This came from Tyron Campbell’s private collection and was with him when he passed away. I’ve been told by others that the sewn in white label saying “A 7385” comes from the inventory of Tony Berlant. I imagine that Tryon purchased this from Tony at some point. This panel is in unrestored, original condition.
