An Early Rio Grande Blanket with Light Indigo Blue

Hispanic, or Spanish Colonial New Mexico

circa 1850 | Wool | Item 1129

This is a beautiful Rio Grande blanket with natural white, natural brown and light indigo blue dye. The weft is all hand spun churro wool. A banded pattern is used with 7 banded systems across the whole blanket. The center banding system is different from all the rest in that its center is a system of beaded bands alternating between indigo and natural brown wefts.

The blanket has some small areas of older restoration and darning still in place. The overall effect is strong and bold with such stunning indigo blues.
