An Early Zuni Coyote Fetish
Item: 1171
Origin: Zuni
Date: 19th century
Media: Hard stone, hide
Dimensions: 3.5″ x 2″ x 1″
Description: This is believed to be a coyote fetish based on the longer tail in the back, as well the longer length of the body. The stone is a hard, weighted stone and may be hematite, however the weight does not feel heavy enough to be pure hematite. There is red oxide in the crevices suggesting a variation of hematite. There is good age to the body, with areas rubbed smooth over time that have more contact with surfaces. The point on the back appears to be the same material as the animal.
