An Unusual Santa Clara Pottery “Aladdin” Jar

Santa Clara Pueblo

Late 19th century | Item 2326

This is an unusual Santa Clara jar, both in shape and subject matter. I’m assuming this is an early tourist piece made to look like the classic Aladdin lamp. The tall neck ends in a flared out opening, crenulated around the rim. The same crenulation occurs around the most outer diameter of the jar which is just below the midpoint. The upper surface has a rough quality, likely something that happened in the original firing. The underbody is smooth with few imperfections. There is one small chip that has much age to it on one of the outer crenulations.

Dimensions 4 3/4" tall, 6" diameter
Condition Very good shape with surface wear or erosion, no cracks, breaks or restoration. One early and well worn chip on one of the outer crenulations.
Provenance From a private collection in Denver, Colorado
Santa Clara aladdin jar with handle and undulating rim, jet black, circa 1890 available at the James Compton Gallery.
