Apache Saddlebags, Hide and Stroud, Circa 1890

Apache Tribe

Circa 1890 | Hide, Stroud, Thread | Item 2692

This is an impressive set of Apache saddlebags. The center front has a 10″ slit, or hole, that allows for items to go inside, then drop to either side for transporting on the horse. The hide is supple and soft, likely deer, and is full of cutout designs laid over red stroud cloth. The ends are heavily fringed with both fine fringe and fancy cutout tails. The sewing is all done with strong thread, typical of the Apache to use thread instead of sinew.
