Early Apache Awl Case, 19th Century
Apache tribe
Circa 1875 | Buffalo hide, Glass Beads, Tin | Item 2111
This is a wonderful awl case that shows good age and is quite early. It is a highly decorated case. The hide is buffalo, and there are 4 layers each defined by a ring of tin cones. Beads line the top edge. There is a brass button attached to the top on one side. The bottom attached beaded portion is unusual, and adds a level of intrigue to the piece. The beads are white, black, deep blue, light blue, and pink. There is bead loss and tin cone loss, but this is what happens when something is loved and used.
