Early, Navajo Single Dress Panel, ex Tyron Campbell Collection
Navajo
Wool | Item 2100
This is an amazing single Navajo dress panel. The center with the brown weft has amazing movement to it, more than I have ever seen in a single blanket. The two, highly different reds consist of 100% cochineal for the lighter red and 100% lac for the darker red. Both of these reds are raveled bayeta from the early, worsted, s spun yarns. Joe Ben Wheat dates this type of bayeta as a 1860 or earlier yarn. The arrangement of the design is unusual for a dress panel. The weaver took extra work here to create a unique panel. The indigo blue crosses are somewhat whimsical in their shape, and they are all contained in the lac red band. Interesting to note how stretched out the stepped patterns are at the top and bottom of the red sections.
This dress panel is more like a child’s blanket with the degree of attention to detail and variations. The entire panel is in original, unrestored condition. Notice the indigo blue side selvage diving into the brown weft where the weaver made the turn on the loom. Tyron Campbell had this in his private collection when he passed away. Everything about this panel is wonderful, and I am so excited to offer it.
