Early Pair of Sioux Moccasins, Circa 1875

Plains, Sioux tribe

Circa 1875 | Buffalo hide, Glass Beads | Item 2112

This is a very appealing pair of Sioux moccasins. The simplicity of the design and the limited color palette make for an overall handsome look. There are only three bead colors: deep blue, white, and red with white hearts. The pair are on buffalo hide. There is a forked tongue that is beaded as well. The souls are parfleche and show good wear from being worn. The beads are sewn on with sinew. The tops of the ankle portion were lined with early calico cotton fabric, much of which has been worn off. There is evidence of an older repair, where the side was likely torn and sinew was added to secure the break.
