Early Polacca Polychrome Seed Jar

Hopi

Circa 1860 | Clay | Item 2298

This smaller seed jar has the classic form for the period. A saucer like shape puts the widest segment at half way up the jar. There is a short rim projecting up from the body just under 1″. The underbody is painted with a red slip. The upper body has designs typical of Zuni, such as the capped spirals. The elongated rectangle with tips at each end is unknown to me. The finish to the surface has the classic crackle wear characteristic of Polacca pottery.
