Ex-Voto, Mexico, circa 1890, New born with Diabetes
Mexico
Circa 1890 | Oil Paint, Tin | Item 2163
This is a wonderful and powerful ex-voto, a prayer of thanks for the healing of a baby. The art on it is austere, making it all the more potent. The mother sits in a barren room with three walls visible, a tiled floor and a darkened ceiling. The baby is bundled in her arms. She appears to be holding a red object in her fingers in front of the baby. That, or the red might be the sickness inferred with the child. In the upper right corner is Saint Anthony, perhaps holding the Christ child in his left hand and a flower (Lily?) in the right hand. He appears to be hovering on a cloud. The lower righthand corner has the inscription:
Maria Josefa Huerta, invoco a Senor San Antonio en favor del nino Manuel Leobou do, que ci los cinco dias de nacido, enfermo de la visa, y por su mediacion para con Dios, quedo sano a los cuarentor dias de padeser.
Translated:
Maria Josefa Huerta, I invoke Lord Saint Anthony in favor of the child Manuel Leobou lo, who was five days old, sick with diabetes, and through his mediation with God, was healed after forty days of suffering.
