Description: This is a replica of an existing 17th century wampum belt showing the first wood church built at Heron. The church is seen at one end. The opposite end shows a group of irregular squares. I imagine this might represent the collection of Native tribes associated with the general area. In the middle is a Christian cross. Flanked on each side are three people, assumed to be showing male and female as well as tribal and missionary. The glass beads are translucent, showing light through them. The beads are set on hemp, the traditional material used to weave these early belts. This is a beautiful memory of the early treaties and trials of one group trying to be with an other. We know how this tragically ends, but along this path incredible objects were made recording these transitions.
