Hopi Dance Sash, 1940
Hopi
1940 | Wool, Cotton | Item 2658
This Hopi, broadface sash is in vibrant condition, with evidence of having been worn and danced in. A tag is attached to the sash reading: Broadface sash made in 1940. Given to Thomas Takala when he turned 18 years old. Thomas is now 70 years old. The owner’s name “Takala” is written in ink on the sash at the midway point. There is some dye run and other color run and some dirt, all likely resulting from being worn and danced in. Very rare to have a sash like this with such strong attribution. The warp is wool, the weft is cotton machine plied yarn. The colors of the sash are all woven with machine plied wool, in black, green, red and deep blue.
