Hopi Kachina Face Canteen by Nampeyo of Hano

Hopi

Circa 1890 | Clay | Item 1860

This is a rare and beautiful example of an early piece by Nampeyo. The kachina is likely what we call the Shalako mana. Notice how the eyes are two different colors and how the earrings are so different from each other. These are traits of Nampeyo’s work. The canteen is beautifully formed, showing a flat base and two lugs to hang from. The patina is deep and rich, and shows a crackling suggesting a type of finish noted with Polacca ware.
