Hopi Moki Wearing Blanket

Hopi

Circa 1880-1890 | Wool | Item 2427

This is a classic Hopi wearing blanket in the Moki pattern of alternating fine bands of brown and deep blue. The wool is soft and is likely churro. There are no sectional lines (lazy lines) and no corner tassel embellishments (qualities both indicative of Navajo weaving). The corners only have the warp and weft selvage tied into a knot. The blue has not been tested. Some of it appears to be indigo, and some appears to be synthetic. The Hopi only wove for themselves and, on occasion, other Puebloans, but they did not typically weave for commercial sale like the Navajo did.
