Hopi, Polacca Bowl Circa 1850

Hopi

1850 | Clay | Item 2241

This charming Hopi, polacca, seed jar has an amazing surface, full of crackle and texture and color variations. There is a strong fire cloud partially covering up one of the designs. The base is painted red, and there are two boundary lines, with breaks in them, just above the base. The rim has one boundary line with no break in it. The rim is painted a chocolate brown. There are no cracks, breaks and no restoration. This is an early example of a more primitive design form well after Sikyatki but before Nampeyo of Hano.
