Hopi Sikyatki Ladle

Hopi

1400 - 1625 | Clay | Item 2512

This is a rare and intact ladle, possibly under continual use. The handle shows much use. The inside bowl has an intricate design in a brown/red paint of a circle with rays and dashes all around. The outside has a simple line forming triangles along the rim in the same color. The rim was painted the same red, but remains only along the sides. The front of the ladle is more worn and the rim color is gone.

The base has a fair amount of writing. In pencil is “Old Hopi”, in ink on four rows is: #43 / Jean?con / Sikyatki, Ariz / 1918. This ladle was acquired by my client’s father directly from Hopi sometime between 1978 and 1984. The family has lived in Santa Fe, NM for several generations.
