Large Santo Domingo Dough Bowl
Santo Domingo Pueblo
Circa 1905 | Clay | Item 2122
At 11.5″ tall and 19″ in diameter, this is one of the largest dough bowls I have seen. The shape is lovely with a nice out flaring rim. The design portion goes to the half way point vertically. The design is in the classic Santo Domingo style with black interconnecting triangles over a warm, creamy slip. The design is well thought out with no breaks in the pattern going all the way around. There are 10 repeated designs all with an hourglass in the middle. The hourglass has within it two leaf shapes on the vertical and connecting at the center. There is a double border at the top and at the bottom. Below the bottom border is a wide, darker red band characteristic of Santo Domingo pottery done before 1925. This bowl was likely made between 1900 and 1910.
This bowl was broken and restored. The restoration is very good, with some visibility of the breaks on the inside, and as well on the underside. The designed areas and parts seen below do not show any evidence of having been repaired.
