Large Santo Domingo Pottery Bowl, Circa 1930

Santo Domingo Pueblo

Circa 1930 | Clay | Item 2388

This is a large Santo Domingo pottery bowl painted in the classic style of leaves and flowers on a soft tan slip base, both inside and out. The inside has a vine with two flowers in red, four leaves in black and a bird sitting on a seed pod. The bird is in detail done in black with red wings. The exterior shows seven mounds coming off of the rim, with each mound a series of three arcs. These mounds are all linked and make an impressive, exterior statement.

There are two, small rim chips with the large one mostly hidden from view as it’s on the underside. There is a stain on the base of the inside that appears to be oil. On the lower exterior there is surface loss that effects only the tan slip. The black painted mounds are all intact with no loss.

Condition Good condition, one rim chip, stain inside bottom area, loss of glaze exterior towards the base
