Late Classic Navajo Child’s Blanket
Navajo
Wool | Item 2522
This is an unusual and very attractive Navajo child’s sized blanket. Handspun white churro wool makes up the background. The same wool is dyed red, orange and indigo blue to create the design elements. The top and the bottom have a series of natural, brown churro wool bands alternating with reds and indigo blue. These bands are trespassed into by the designs that zig zag throughout the blanket. Orange and indigo blue zig zag in a stepped manor forwards the outside edges. The center region has two sets of fine lined red and indigo blue zig zag lines creating two, elongated diamonds that house two serrated centers. At each end of the zig zag lines are diamonds stacked, with one end having three and the other, four. The whole effect is both about grounding, with the upper and lower bands, and movement with all the zig zag activity. There are brown warps only on one side going in 7 1/2″. This has the effect of making a slightly visible, vertical band that is darker than the rest of the blanket.
