Ledger Drawing by James Black, Southern Cheyenne

James Black, Southern Cheyenne, 2025

Paper, Ink, Colored Pencil | Item 2405

The ledger paper used for this original drawing by James Black dates to March 29, 1872. Over these two sheets of ledger paper are drawn a Cheyenne man and woman courting each other. He is dressed in his best and has flowers in his hands. You can see his hair drop and his breast plate as well as his very fancy leggings. She is also dressed up and holds an umbrella. She has on a extravagant pair of dentalium earrings and wears a calico dress wrapped in a plaid blanket with a sash at her hip. Her feet are dressed with decorated moccasins and leggings under the calico. The framing includes a low glare plexiglass instead of glass, making the framed piece lighter and less reflective.
