Mexican Tin Retablo of Saint with Angles, 19th Century
Mexico
19th Century | Tin, Paint | Item 2631
This Mexican, tin retablo has beautiful imagery and I suspect is earlier than most, perhaps as early as the mid 19th century. The darkness of the background lends to a more mysterious ambiance. It has been suggested to me that this is likely Nuestra senora de la Cueva Santa (Our Lady of the Holy Cave), a revered Marian apparition, surrounded by angels placing a crown above her head. She has, above her, two angles on each side. A fair amount of paint loss, but amazingly, not around her face or head, nor effecting the angles – it’s a miracle!

Fair condition with paint loss. However, the paint, miraculously, has not effected the critical areas such as the head of the Saint and the heads of the angles.
