Navajo Double Saddle Blanket – Double Sided

Navajo

Circa 1940 | Wool | Item 1904

This a rare and dramatic Navajo saddle blanket. The vertical orientation is powerful, and while it’s a bit hard to focus on the blanket, the overall effect is strong, like a moire pattern. There is one area, about 5″ wide, of darker brown that stands out, on both sides. This variation to the field is what helps make this such a visually powerful blanket. This blanket is double woven, so it’s thicker and has the same pattern on the other side, but in reverse. Double sided blankets wear much longer on the horse, but are much more difficult to weave.
