Navajo Double Saddle Blanket, Double Woven, Circa 1900

Navajo

Circa 1900 | Wool | Item 2020

This is an unusual double saddle blanket, double woven (the colors are opposite on one side to the other and the piece is thicker for this reason) which makes it very strong as a saddle blanket. The design is almost monochromatic, until you look at it more closely. There is a high level of sophistication to the design, and I believe the weaver had this in her intentions when she wove it. The mix of the colors and the placement of positive to negative (white) space makes for a highly dynamic piece of art, especially when considering its apparent simplicity.
