Navajo Double Saddle Blanket with Concho Belt Border
Navajo
1930 - 1940 | Item 2308
This is one of the most impressed Navajo double saddle blankets. The border is designed as a concho belt with round conchos and butterfly conchos alternating on a hide strip. The border surrounds two matching squares of carder grey yarns. The green dots and the blue and purple border for the squares are done with 4-ply Germantown yarns. The rest of the blanket is woven with hand spun wool weft. It’s expertly woven with a precision rarely seen in Navajo saddle blankets. There are only a few small sectional lines. Both sides have equal color. This blanket was purchased by a California family on a visit to the Southwest reportedly around 1905. However, my conservative time line for this blanket puts it more around 1940. The blanket has spent most of its life in storage and is in pristine condition.
