Navajo Double Saddle Blanket With Two Sides

Item: 1569

Origin: Navajo
Date: Circa 1930

Media: Wool

Dimensions: 58″ by 29″

Description: This is a two sided, double saddle blanket.  The pattern is the same on each side other than the colors are reversed.  The blanket is a compilation of checked squares of white and gold dyed wool.  Between the squares are vertical rows of thinner, rectangular shapes that are split between the white and the gold colors. The overall effect is powerful. The design plays with your eyes. Because the rectangles are slit in their colors, the eye tends to see the vertical aspect as bulging and narrowing like an hourglass.  There is implied movement where there is in fact none.   This makes for a dynamic piece of art that carries a modern impression.

Condition:  Condition is original without restoration. Colors are the same on each side.  There is some thinning in the central areas.  I suspect that this was used as a saddle blanket

Provenance: From a private collection in Santa Fe, NM.
