Navajo Third Phase Chief Blanket, Circa 1890

Navajo

Wool | Item 2394

This third phase chief blanket is woven in hand spun wool. The white and brown yarns are natural colors. The red yarn is white dyed with synthetic red. The off-purple color is white yarn dyed with a purple dye. There are sectional lines throughout and the edging is down with warp and weft selvage cords. The diamonds and partial diamonds are woven in a stepped pattern, indicative of the earlier, classic Navajo weaving where any diagonal line was woven as a stepped movement. The wool is soft and supple, feeling and looking like churro wool. It has a blanket feel to it. Both sides are equal in color. Take note of the size – 68″ by 81″ – this is a large blanket.
