Navajo Transitional Rug of Natural Colors

Navajo

Circa 1925 | Wool | Item 2006

This is an interesting Navajo weaving. It is bordered on both ends with a Greek key pattern of dark brown against a carded lighter brown field. The main body of the rug has a four square orientation with an abstract cross in the center. The cross, as it grows towards its perimeter, turns into a large stepped triangle. This is all on a carded lighter brown field which itself is then set against a white weft background leading to all sides. It has a very attractive look. The weave is heavy, so this could be used as a floor rug, or as a wall hanging. The only dyed wool is that used for the weft and warp selvages. Here we have red cords throughout. The colors are equal on both sides with no fading. No restoration.
