New Mexican Small Colcha – Frontier Life!
New Mexico, signed "JV" , possibly by Judy Vigil of the San Louis Valley, Colorado
Crica 1980 | Wool | Item 2546
The scene on this small colcha appears to show a variety of Western features of the Southwest. A Native woman with a feather headdress, a group of settlers on foot and on horse, and a cover wagon with a driver led by two horses all on a Western landscape background. The woman with the headdress appear to be holding something – a book or bible? To her upper right are 5 tavelers, two walking and one with a baby on his shoulders, the other two on horses. The covered wagon is being driven by a man that has a blue shirt and matching blue cowboy hat. The composition is interesting with intrigue, and has satisfying spatial arrangements. The initials “JV” is the signature at the bottom right. No full name has surfaced yet from my brief research. Please forgive the reflections in the glass, occasionally creating what appear to be marks on the colcha, which they are not.
