New Mexican Spanish Colonial Axe, 18th Century

This is a very old and well used axe. It came out of Penasco, New Mexico into an Albuquerque collection in the 1980s. The haft is original, likely ponderosa pine, and shows much age. The iron blade has been hand formed and joins the haft with two nails coming out of the back side of the blade. This type of axe can be called a goosewing axe and is typically used to hewn logs for building.
