NM Retablo by 18th C. Novice, Madonna with Christ Child
18th Century Novice
Late 18th century - 1790 | Wood, Oil Paint | Item 2279
This a very rare New Mexcian retablo. The maker – the 18th C. Novice – has been verified by Robert Gallegos. The board frame, carved out of the same board, as well as the rosette at the top, are characteristics of this santero. The paints used are oil, before the switch in the early 19th century to water based paints. The board has split and was mended and glued, likely a long time ago. The whole board has a camber to it, as seen in the photos.
The painted scene shows the Madonna holding the Christ child. Both are wearing fanciful clothing with much drapery. The Christ child appears to be holding a red heart in his hand. They are backed by a black background with red curtains pulled back to each corner. The scene is humbly executed and has a charm all to itself.
