Ohkay Owingeh or San Juan Jar, Circa 1920 with Graffiti

Okay Owhingeh

Clay | Item 1972

This beautiful jar is covered with Native graffiti all over the surface. There are two dates, 1920 and 1950, a face, rolling logs, a heart with an arrow through it… the list goes on. These marks are not from a child, but likely an adult, and likely within the household. This jar has a beautiful shape to it with a well defined shoulder lifting up to a nice rim. There are several black fire clouds on the underbelly. The stone polished, tan underbody is a perfect contrast to the upper red body. This is a real winner!

Dimensions 9.5" diameter, 5.75" tall
Condition Very good with rim chips and graffiti throughout the surface. No restoration.
Provenance Ex. Larry Frank collection
