Original Period Photo of Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy, Ex. Larry Frank

Last quarter 19th century | Photography | Item 1933

In a statement from Ray Jon de Aragon to Larry Frank, “family heirloom handed down by Doña Catalina Mondragón de Valdez who knew the Bishop personally and visited with him often in Santa Fe. She was a santera in Las Vegas. Doña Catalina was my grandmother.”

This is a rare photo of the famous Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy, in its original frame. Archbishop Lamy was an integral part of New Mexico and its history.

Jean-Baptiste Lamy (October 11, 1814 – February 13, 1888), was a French-American Roman Catholic prelate who served as the first Archbishop of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Willa Cather’s novel Death Comes for the Archbishop is based on his life and career (albeit renamed to “Jean-Marie Latour” for artistic license), as is John Horgan’s nonfiction work Lamy of Santa Fe. He sometimes anglicised his name to John Baptist Lamy
