Our Lady of Sorrows Tin Retablo, 19th C.

Mexico

Last half 19th century | Tin, Oil Paint | Item 2354

This is a beautiful Mexican, tin retablo of Our Lady of Sorrows. The condition is very good and the color contrasts strong. The bird on her left on top of the pillar is particularly sweet.

Our Lady of Sorrows refers to the Virgin Mary, highlighting her intense suffering during the Passion of her son, Jesus. This devotion recognizes the “interior martyrdom” of her grief as she witnessed her son’s suffering and death, and it is often symbolized by the seven sorrows of Mary, which include prophecies about Jesus, the flight into Egypt, and his crucifixion and burial. The feast day for Our Lady of Sorrows is September 15th.
