Pueblo Blue Bordered Manta 19th Century
Item: 736
Origin: San Ildefonso Pueblo
Date: : Circa 1880
Media: Wool
Dimensions: 54″ x 39″
Description: This classic manta was worn by the married women. The body is a natural brown wool, homespun, done in a diagonal twill. The upper and lower borders have a white, handspun yarn dyed with a dark indigo blue. The selvages are indigo two plied yarns. The simple aesthetic of these blankets give them a very modern feel. Their soft color scheme of natural brown and deep indigo reminds many of those paintings done in a similar color palate by Mark Rothko.
Condition: This manta is in original, un restored condition. There is evidence that the blanket was likely over dyed with a pinon pitch dye, and one can see traces of that left in the brown central field of the blanket.
