Pueblo Clay Buffalo Fetish

Item: 750

Origin: Pueblo
Date: 19th Century

Media: Clay
Dimensions:  7″ x 3.5″ x 2″

Description: The simple form of this sculpture clearly says “Buffalo”. Characteristic of these earlier, 19th C. fetishes, straw has  been stuck into the animal in the front portion of the body, some of it still remaining.  It is not known what these were used for, but the answer has to involve the reverence for the buffalo, its life, its sacrifices and its offerings to the tribe.  I’ve seen a good handful of these clay forms and this is the largest one I’ve seen to date.

Condition:  This buffalo is in unrestored excellent condition.
