Pueblo, Painted Dance Rattle

Pueblo, possibly Hopi

Circa 1930 | Gourd, Wood, Paints | Item 2222

This is a very attractive rattle. One side is designed with a partial flower, the upper area with stepped designs. The other side shows what appear to be a pair of horns, as well as stepped shapes. Every design is outlined with white paint and filled in with other colors. The upper portion of each side shows punctured holes in a special sequence that might refer to constellations. The handle shows much use, with a strong colored, deep brown patina. Remnants of feathers are found at the top and at the upper portion of the handle.
