Pueblo, Painted, Gourd Dance Rattle

Pueblo, possible Hopi

Circa 1930 | Gourd, Wood, Paint | Item 2221

The handle of this rattle shows much wear and use, signs that this was at one time regularly used. The gourd shape is classic with a larger upper radius and a smaller lower section. A black band of paint defines the widest point of the rattle and separates the spaces into upper and lower. Semi circles, or ellipes, circle the rattle both above and below, all painted on the inside with various colors. The lower segment is painted a solid green. The top of the rattle is segmented with blue lines into four sections. The stones inside are larger, making for a strong and solid sound that could be made loud if one wanted.
