Red on Tan or Redware Early San Juan Bowl

Ohkay Owingeh or San Juan Pueblo

Circa 1880 or earlier | Clay | Item 2236

This is such a beautiful bowl, not only for its shape and deep and complex colors, but also for it’s high evidence of use. The depth of color in the red rim is amazing. As well, the external un-slipped exterior has many color variations, especially set up by the stone polished marks. The interior has consistent scratch marks from some sort of stirring tool. There is a single, black fire cloud at the flat bottom base.
