Sankawi Black on Cream Large Bowl

Proto-Historic Pueblo

1500 - 1690 | Clay | Item 2050

This is a magnificent bowl coming from the Proto-Historic period sometime between 1500 and 1690. The bowl is large at 13 1/4″ diameter and a height of 5 1/4″ so it has a commanding presence. The designs are clear, but are applied clumsily or as if the potter was in a hurry. This is characteristic of Sankawi black on cream. There is a certain degree of non-accuracy in regards to the application of the black paint. This creates a humble feeling about the work, as if the gesturing approach foretells a certain way of understanding the pottery and the potter.

These was one, larger piece that has been reglued. Under black light, there is no further evidence of breakage, but some evidence of small areas of paint over, not so much in the desing area, but the voided areas. It’s rare to find a bowl this large and of this age as in good condition as it is.
