Santa Clara Bowl With Finger Impressions, Late 19th Century

Santa Clara Pueblo

Circa 1890 | Clay | Item 2228

This earlier Santa Clara bowl has six sets of finger impressions at the widest point of the high shoulder. Three of the sets have 5 impressions, and three have 6 impressions. The shape of the bowl is attractive, with a strong flexion from the base to the shoulder, which is nearly at the top of the bowl. At the point of the impressions, the should goes back inwards for about 2″ to create the rim. The shoulder is the most satisfying aspect of this bowl, so it makes sense this is where the impressions are. The original Santa Clara label with the original price is still affixed to the lower part of the bowl.
