Santa Clara Water Jar Circa 1910

Santa Clara Pueblo

Clay | Item 1975

My favorite features of this Santa Clara water jar are the crenelated rim and the strong shoulder just above the mid body. Strong, nearly horizontal shoulders always give me a sense of security, and a fine place to rest my eyes. This shoulder is particularly interesting because of the set-in rim carved out which creates a beveled like band all around the jar. This occurs above the mid body and before the neck begins climbing to the top. There is a small indentation at the base to allow for the head to carry the jar from the well the home.

Dimensions 8 1/4" tall, 10 3/4" diameter
Condition Very good with minor restoration to chips on the rim, and a crack mid body just above the shoulder
Provenance A private collecion in Corrales, New Mexico
