Small, Early, Painted Pine Box, Possibly New Mexico

New Mexico or Mexico

Late 18th to early 19th century | Pine | Item 2116

This early box shows evidence of a painted front, most of which has warn off. The patina is wonderful and the hardware is all original. The joinery is all dove tail as seen in the photos. Early on the back hinges broke and you can see, adjacent to the hinges, where a hide hinge was put into place. The hide must have been attached with brass tacks, only the holes remain. The same broken hinges are still there, only repaired. The paint appears to be water based and not oil, which makes it more likely a New Mexican box and not Mexican to South.
