Small Hopi Manta

Hopi

Circa 1900 | Wool | Item 1990

This is an unusual weaving in how it was made. These mantas are typically embroidered once they have been woven. Here, we have the designs that would have been done with embroidery instead show up as having been woven in. In other examples, the body of the blanket would be woven with cotton weft and warps with wool added on as the embroidery. Here the whole weaving is machine plied wool. The size is small, almost diminutive, making this a very sweet blanket.

Dimensions 24' by 18 1/2"
Condition Very good with a few small areas of missing wool.
Provenance From a private collection in New Mexico.
A small Hopi manta, entirely woven without embroidery and done with machine plied yarn, circa 1900
